Nationals closer Doolittle has setback

WASHINGTON (AP) Nationals All-Star closer Sean Doolittle experienced soreness in his left foot when throwing off a mound and does not have a timetable for his return.

Doolittle has not pitched in a game since July 6 due to toe inflammation. He threw off a mound Friday and had an MRI the following day that revealed a stress reaction, comparable to a bone bruise, in the bridge of his foot.

He was wearing a walking boot on Sunday. The 31-year-old right-hander says he thinks his recovery time will be measured in weeks, not months.

CHICAGO (AP) Matt Carpenter has a garden in his backyard that was planted by teammate Adam Wainwright. The infielder is using the fresh ingredients to make his own salsa, and he brought some on St. Louis' road trip for the first time.

Apparently, it's one potent mixture.

Brewers fans give Hader warm ovation

MILWAUKEE (AP) Milwaukee Brewers reliever Josh Hader has received a warm ovation from fans in his first appearance on the mound since his years-old racist and homophobic tweets surfaced during the All-Star Game.

The left-hander jogged in from the bullpen after the Brewers scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 4-2 lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers. He took a few warmup tosses before being introduced by the public address announcer.

A's acquire Mets closer Familia

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) After three years of missing the playoffs and dealing away fan favorites like Yoenis Cespedes, Josh Donaldson and Sonny Gray, the Oakland Athletics are trying to steer themselves in the opposite direction.

They certainly took a significant step Saturday by acquiring New York Mets reliever Jeurys Familia to bolster a bullpen that includes All-Star closer Blake Treinen.

Murphy lifts Rockies to 7th win in row

PHOENIX (AP) Tom Murphy went almost two years between major-league home runs, but his first of the season came at the perfect time.

Murphy's two-out, pinch-hit solo home run in the eighth inning was the big hit in the Colorado Rockies' 6-5 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday night.

Cespedes may need surgery on both heels

NEW YORK (AP) A day after saying he may need surgery on both heels that would require an eight-to-10-month recovery, Yoenis Cespedes missed the Mets' 7-6 Subway Series loss Saturday because of body soreness and New York's front office did not publicly comment on his startling health revelation.

Cespedes homered in Friday's win over the Yankees, his first game since May 13 after two months on the disabled list caused by with a strained right hip flexor.

Royals acquire OF Goodwin from Nationals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Outfielder Brian Goodwin has been acquired by the Kansas City Royals from the Washington Nationals for minor league pitcher Jacob Condra-Bogan.

The 27-year-old Goodwin hit .200 with three homers and 12 RBIs in 48 games for the Nationals this season. He bruised his left wrist diving for a ball and did not play from April 15 until May 15, when he had two at-bats. He went back on the disabled list, returned June 1 and is hitting .171 (7 for 41) since.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Justin Verlander hadn't earned a win in the past six starts of his All-Star season. George Springer hadn't homered or contributed many game-changing hits in the last month.

Those are the closest things to crises in the charmed world of the Houston Astros, and the two stars dramatically ended their droughts in another blowout.
